The Cryogenic Institute of New England, Inc. (CINE) was formed after the acquisition of Nitro-Freeze, LLC., a Connecticut based company. It was moved to its current location in Worcester, Massachusetts in early 2002. The previous owner, Richard Salews, established an investment casting company over 35 years ago and became involved in Cryogenic Tempering as part of the business. He remains active today with CINE as an advisor.

Mr. Salews was keenly aware that abrasion, stress and corrosion control were critical to his business as control of these elements defined the quality of the casting that he could provide to his customers. Complex custom tooling that was often required for after-machining was not only expensive, but when sharpened, would change dimensions and often have to be discarded.

Perseverance in overcoming these obstacles lead to better and better temperature controls, alloy knowledge and the means for their control. Cryogenics, in its infancy, appeared to contribute to pronounced improvements in all these directions.

With the advent of more and more sophisticated computers, he advanced a portion of his operations into molecular science of cryogenically tempering metals and other materials. This knowledge coupled with years of practical experience was transfered to the Cryogenic Institute of New England, Inc. by Mr. Salews when he sold his business. He remains committed to the advancement of technology and supports CINE in various technical capacities on an as needed basis.

In 2002 we added our cryogenic deburring and deflashing services for the removal of burrs and flash from machined and molded parts. This over the past few years has become one of the mainstay services of our business.

Our newest offerings include cryogenic helium processing and thermal cycling. These processes are ideal for materials testing, failure analysis, and deep cryogenic tempering. Typical applications these services usually come from the aerospace and weapons industries.
